Money and Banking Fundamentals for Beginners

Understand how money works, how banks operate and earn profit, and how the Colombian banking system is structured and regulated by BanRep and the SFC.

This module lays the foundation for your entire financial education. Before you can budget, save, invest, or manage debt, you need to understand the basic building blocks: what money actually is, how the institutions that hold your money operate, and what rights and protections you have as a consumer in Colombia.

You will start by exploring the nature of money itself — why it exists, what gives it value, and how inflation silently reshapes your purchasing power over time. In Colombia, where moderate but persistent inflation (around 5% per year) erodes the real value of idle cash, understanding money is immediately practical. You will learn how the Banco de la República (BanRep) manages monetary policy through its tasa de política monetaria, why healthy savings rates matter for protecting purchasing power, and how instruments like the UVR (Unidad de Valor Real) are used in long-term contracts.

From there, you will learn how banks function as businesses, how they profit from the spread between what they pay savers and what they charge borrowers, and why understanding the true cost of credit — including Colombia’s regulated usury cap — can save you millions of pesos. The module then dives into the Colombian banking system specifically: the roles of BanRep, the Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (SFC), the main banks from Bancolombia to Davivienda and Banco de Bogotá, and how Fogafín protects your deposits up to $50 million COP per institution.

Finally, you will get a practical guide to bank accounts — cuentas de ahorro, cuentas corrientes, and digital accounts — and explore the neobanks and digital wallets like Nequi, Daviplata, Nu Colombia, and Lulo Bank that, through payment innovations including PSE and the Bre-B instant-payment system, have transformed how millions of Colombians move money every day.

By the end of Module 1, you will have the vocabulary and mental models needed to make informed decisions every time you interact with a financial institution.
