Credit and Debt Management in Colombia Today
Understand your credit history, use cards wisely, manage debt, and learn about consumer, UVR, and mortgage loans in Colombia.
This module tackles the topic that causes more financial stress than any other: debt. Used intelligently, credit is a powerful tool that lets you buy big-ticket items, invest in education, and smooth out income fluctuations. Used carelessly, it becomes a trap — and in Colombia, the SFC-regulated usury cap (tasa de usura) sets the ceiling on interest rates, but even the maximum legal rate can be costly if you carry a revolving balance.
You will begin by understanding how credit works in Colombia — what your credit history means, how the bureaus DataCrédito and TransUnion compile your record, and how lenders evaluate you when you apply. You will learn to check your own credit report, understand what hurts or helps your standing, and know exactly what lenders see.
From there, you will master credit cards: how interest is calculated, how installment payments (cuotas) work, what the true annual cost of financing tells you, and how to use cards as free short-term financing rather than expensive long-term debt. You will learn the strategies that keep you in control and the traps that banks use to extract maximum interest.
The module then addresses debt management for those already in difficulty. You will learn about restructuring options, your consumer rights and the role of the SFC and consumer-protection channels, how collection works, and the legal protections available when debt becomes unmanageable. You will also explore every major loan type available in Colombia — créditos de libre inversión, créditos de libranza (payroll-deducted loans), and mortgages in UVR or fixed rate — understanding the risks and benefits of each.
By the end of Module 4, you will understand how to use credit strategically, manage existing debt effectively, and avoid the most common traps in Colombia’s lending market.
