Investing and Growing Wealth in Colombia Today
Learn investing fundamentals, explore Colombian options like FICs, TES, BVC stocks, and ETFs, open a brokerage account, and understand DIAN taxes.
This module marks a turning point in your financial education. Everything you have learned so far — understanding money, managing bank accounts, budgeting, saving, and handling debt — has been about protecting and organizing the money you earn. Now you will learn how to make your money work for you, growing wealth over time through investing within Colombia’s financial system.
You will begin with the fundamentals of investing: what it means, how it differs from saving, and why compound interest is the single most powerful force in personal finance. You will understand the relationship between risk and return, learn about renta fija versus renta variable, and discover why beating Colombia’s moderate inflation (~5%) through real returns sits at the center of every sound portfolio.
From there, you will explore every major investment option available in Colombia. You will learn about Fondos de Inversión Colectiva (FIC) that provide diversification with professional management — from money-market funds for liquidity to equity and bond funds. TES (Tesorería bonos) are Colombia’s government bonds, offering stable fixed-income returns. You will also access international stocks through platforms like trii, tyba, and Davivienda Corredores, and through ETFs. The Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (BVC) lists domestic stocks and funds for those ready to invest locally.
The module then addresses building wealth for the long term. Colombia’s pension system offers both a public option (Colpensiones) and private pension funds (AFP/RAIS) — understanding your choice is critical for retirement security. You will learn why disciplined, diversified investing is the practical path to a comfortable future and how to calculate how much you actually need.
Finally, you will learn about taxes and the DIAN. Understanding your tax obligations directly affects how much of your investment returns you keep. You will learn about income tax (declaración de renta), which investment returns require reporting, how Régimen Simple applies to small entrepreneurs, and how to stay compliant.
By the end of Module 5, you will have the knowledge and confidence to start investing — even with small amounts — and a clear roadmap for building long-term wealth within Colombia’s financial system.
