Module Lesson of 24 3 min

Intermediate Financial Planning

Take your finances further with insurance, renting vs buying, tax optimization, Régimen Simple income, and long-term goal setting in Colombia.

This module takes you beyond the fundamentals. You have learned how to manage bank accounts, build a budget, save consistently, handle debt responsibly, and begin investing. Now you will address the financial decisions that separate those who merely survive from those who build lasting security and wealth: protecting what you have, making strategic housing decisions, keeping more of what you earn, creating additional income streams, and setting goals that drive everything forward.

You will begin with insurance — the financial safety net that most people ignore until disaster strikes. In Colombia, understanding your healthcare options between the public system (EPS in the contributive regime) and complementary private plans, choosing the right auto insurance (SOAT is mandatory plus voluntary coverage), and protecting your family with life insurance can mean the difference between a manageable setback and financial ruin. You will learn which coverage is mandatory, which is essential, and how to avoid paying for protection you do not need.

From there, you will tackle the biggest financial decision most Colombians face: renting versus buying a home. You will understand how Colombia’s rental market works under Ley 820 de 2003, how annual rent adjustments are tied to the IPC, what UVR-based mortgages and leasing habitacional mean for affordability and risk, and how to evaluate whether buying makes sense for your specific situation. Real numbers for Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali will ground this decision in reality rather than emotion.

The module then addresses tax optimization — not evasion, but the legal strategies that let you keep more of your money. You will master the Régimen Simple de Tributación, understand when to move to the Régimen Ordinario, navigate the DIAN’s obligations around income tax, and learn about the 4x1000 GMF financial-transaction tax. Every peso saved legally on taxes is a peso that works for you.

Next, you will explore side income and freelancing in the Colombian context. From registering as Régimen Simple to issuing invoices electronically, you will understand the legal and tax framework for earning additional income — whether through platforms, freelancing for international clients, or professional consulting.

Finally, you will bring everything together with financial goal setting. Using the SMART framework adapted to Colombia’s financial instruments — CDTs, FICs, BVC investments, and real estate — you will create a concrete roadmap from where you are today to where you want to be. You will learn to track net worth in real (inflation-adjusted) terms, and build a plan that connects daily habits to decades-long outcomes.

By the end of Module 6, you will have the tools and knowledge to make confident, strategic financial decisions that protect your present and build your future within Colombia’s financial landscape.
